The BrahMos missile for the Indian Air Force which can be launched from a Sukhoi-30 is being developed and a test flight will probably be held by the end of this year, said Dr A Sivathanu Pillai, chief controller, R&D, DRDO and chief executive officer and managing director of BrahMos Aerospace. The BrahMos missile used an air breathing scramjet propulsion technology and hence was more fuel efficient than a traditional rocket-powered missile, he said.


Pillai was in Trichy on Saturday to deliver a lecture in the ongoing Pragyan 2012 of the National Institute of Technology, Trichy (NITT). According to him, the paradigm of India's progress must be in the course of a leap frog in technology. "When the world had a cruise missile, India went forward to make a supersonic cruise missile," he said.

Russian Sukhoi Begins Test Flights Of Su-35S Fighter Jet




Russia's Sukhoi aircraft manufacturer has started test flights of its first series-produced Su-35S Flanker-E multirole fighter, the company said on Tuesday.
The aircraft took off from the Komsomolsk-on-Amur airfield in Russia's Far East, spending one and a half hours in the air testing propulsion and control systems.
The Su-35 Flanker-E superiority fighter is powered by two 117S engines with thrust vectoring. It can effectively engage several air targets simultaneously using both guided and unguided missiles and weapon systems.

Indian SWAC Command Gets Su-30MKI Squadrons, Akash SAM and Radars Systems



The Indian Air Force's south west air command (SWAC) will have a Su-30MKI squadron permanently based at Jodhpur sometime in the next two years, according to air marshal AK Gogoi, AOC-in-C of SWAC. Speaking here on Wednesday, air marshal Gogoi said the air force was strengthening itself and would be able to deal with any sort of threat especially from Pakistan and China.

Air marshal Gogoi was on a three-day visit to the Jodhpur air base, the headquarters of SWAC, his first after assuming command.


Talking about the deployment of the DRDO-developed medium range, surface-to-air, Akash missile, air marshal Gogoi, two squadrons of these missiles were soon be deployed, of which one will be at Pune, which falls under SWAC's command. The other deployment would be at Gwalior.


"Besides this, six more squadrons will be deployed in the region to check any threat from China," he added.

China Clones And Sells Advanced Russian Fighter Jets



A YEAR after the collapse of the Soviet Union, a cash-strapped Kremlin began selling China a chunk of its vast military arsenal.

The sale included the pride of the Russian air force, the Sukhoi-27 fighter jet.


For the next 15 years, Russia was China's biggest arms supplier, providing $US20 billion ($20.13bn) to $US30 billion of fighters, destroyers, submarines, tanks and missiles. It even sold Beijing a licence to make the Su-27 fighter jet - with imported Russian parts.


Today, Russia's military bonanza is over, and China's is just beginning.


After decades of importing and reverse-engineering Russian arms, China has reached a tipping point: It now can produce many of its own advanced weapons - including high-tech fighter jets like the Su-27 - and is on the verge of building an aircraft carrier.


Not only have Chinese engineers cloned the prized Su-27's avionics and radar but they are fitting it with the last piece in the technological puzzle, a Chinese jet engine.

In the past two years, Beijing hasn't placed a major order from Moscow.

Now, China is starting to export much of this weaponry, undercutting Russia in the developing world, and potentially altering the military balance in several of the world's flash points.


This epochal turnaround was palpable in the Russian pavilion at November's Airshow China in the southern city of Zhuhai. Russia used to be the star of this show, wowing visitors with its "Russian Knights" aerobatic team, showing off fighters, helicopters and cargo planes, and sealing multibillion dollar deals on the sidelines.


This year, it didn't bring a single real aircraft - only a handful of plastic miniatures, tended by a few dozen bored sales staff.


China, by contrast, laid on its biggest commercial display of military technology - almost all based on Russian know-how.


The star guests were the "Sherdils," a Pakistani aerobatic team flying fighter jets that are Russian in origin but are now being produced by Pakistan and China.


"We used to be the senior partner in this relationship - now we're the junior one," said Ruslan Pukhov, of the Russian Defence Ministry's Public Advisory Council, a civilian advisory body to the military.


Russia's predicament mirrors that of many foreign companies as China starts to compete in global markets with advanced trains, power-generating equipment and other civilian products based on technology obtained from the West.

Indian Air Force To Get New Squadron Of Su-30MKI



The Indian Air Force is seeking for ways to augment its strike capabilities along the north-east Chinese Border and in order to do that they will raise a new squadron of Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter aircraft at the air base. The 102 squadron of Sukhoi-30 multi-role fighter aircraft has been raised from the Chabua air base and is expected to be deployed on the border in a few days.

Three Su-30 MKI fighter jet planes were sent to Chabua airbase from Tezpur in order to announce the rise of a new squadron. The first Sukhoi squadron in the north-east was raised at Tezpur during 2009. According to a spokesperson the new squadron will get its full number of 16-18 aircraft in the next months.

IAF’s plans are to deploy a total of four squadrons at these two bases. Earlier the MiG-21 series fighter aircraft was used, but the Sukhoi’s have slowly replaced this aged aircraft.

HAL will start modernization of last batch of 40 Sukhoi Su 30MKI under “Super -30” Project from 2012. Russian and Indian Specialist are still working on technical performance, under this Project Indian government will be allocating close to US$2.4 billion for Deep Modernization for all the Sukhoi Su30 MKI fleet currently but these upgrades will be carried out only on newly built Su-30, which will be last batch of Su-30 to join IAF.  

This first 40 aircrafts will also get, strengthening of air frame to enable them to carry near 2.5 tonne, Air launched version of Brahmos , Indian air force have already provided two Su-30MKI aircrafts in 2010 to carry out such modification to the airframe and Air launch variant is also ready only integration with airframe is left . Under “Super -30” Project, Su 30MKI will get Russian Phazotron Zhuk-AE Active Electronically Scanned Array AESA radars along with new onboard mission computers, electronic warfare systems and new Russian BVR Missiles rumored to be Novator K-100 missile also known has “AWCS Killer ” and also India’s own Astra BVR Missile. 


Current batches of Su -30 which HAL has been manufacturing are from MKI-3 variants which are further improvement over earlier batches, and “Super -30” upgrades will be carried out in batch wise and older lot of MKI-1 will be covered first. After initial 40 plus aircrafts, older aircrafts will not be receiving any airframe modification to carry Air launched variant of Brahmos, so Brahmos air variant will limited to certain number airframes of MKI fleet only and not all, but all other aircraft fleet of Sukhoi 30 in Indian air force will be able to carry DRDO developed Sub-sonic Cruise Missile “Nirbhay” and other newly developed BVR missiles.

Russia Has Offered To Equip The Indian Su-30MKI Fighter Aircraft With AESA Radar



Russia has offered to equip the Indian Su-30MKI aircraft with the electronically scanned array radar to bring them on par with the most modern fighter aircraft in the world. Currently the technical configuration of the upgraded aircraft with onboard AESA radar is being discussed by Russian and Indian experts. The upgraded aircraft could be equipped with perspective Russian or foreign-made weapon, including Indo-Russian “BrahMos” anti-ship missiles.

An Irkut statement said at Aero India 2011 A multirole Su-30MKI aircraft which became a sort of symbol of the IRKUT Corporation deserves an honourable place in the exposition of the company. 


Fighter developed by JSC “Sukhoi Design Bureau” on demand of the Indian Air Force are mass-manufactured at the Irkutsk Aviation Plant. The IRKUT Corporation delivers to India ready-made Su-30MKI fighters as well as Su-30MKI technical kits for license production by India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd Corporation. 

Russian Air Force Ready To Get 100 Su-35 & Su-34 By 2015


The Russian Air Force will receive up to 100 Sukhoi fighter jets by 2015, the Defense Ministry spokesman said on Sunday.

Three state contracts with the Sukhoi design bureau on the supply of the jets have been already signed, Vladimir Drik said.
Fifty advanced Su-35 Flanker-E multirole fighters, billed as "4++ generation using fifth-generation technology," more than ten advanced Su-27SM Flanker multirole jets and five Su-30M2 Flanker-C multirole fighters are among the aircraft to be supplied.

The Russian Air Force will also receive twenty-five new Su-34 Fullback fighter-bombers in the next few years, the spokesman said.


IAF To Get 42 More HAL-Produced Su-30MKIs Fighters





Hindustan Aeronautics expects the Indian air force to order an additional 42 locally produced Sukhoi Su-30MKIs.
The possible order would come on top of the 180 Su-30MKIs HAL is already producing for the air force, says company chairman Ashok Nayak.




About 105 aircraft from the 180-strong order have been delivered so far, Nayak says. In addition, in mid-2010, India ordered 40 Su-30MKIs as flyaways from Russia's Sukhoi.










Russia Ready To Sell Su-35 Fighter Jets To China



Russia's state-run arms exporter Rosoboronexport said on Tuesday it wasready to hold talks with China on the delivery of advanced Su-35fighter aircraft to the Chinese air force.

"We are ready to work with our Chinese partners to this end [Su-35deliveries]," Deputy General Director of Rosoboronexport AlexanderMikheyev said at the Airshow China 2010, which is being held onNovember 16-21 in Zhuhai.

The Su-35 Flanker-E, powered by two 117S engines with thrust vectoring,combines high maneuverability and the capability to effectively engageseveral air targets simultaneously using both guided and unguidedmissiles and weapon systems.

Russia's Sukhoi aircraft maker earlier said it planned to startdeliveries of the new aircraft, billed as "4++ generation usingfifth-generation technology," to foreign clients in 2011 and produceSu-35s over a period of 10 years up to 2020.


China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition (Airshow China)is the only international aerospace trade show in China that isendorsed by the Chinese central government. The biannual armsexhibition has been held in Zhuhai since 1996.

Samtel to build Cockpit Displays for Sukhoi-30MKI



Delhi-based Samtel Display Systems has vaulted a giant hurdle on theway to its declared goal of becoming a major supplier to the armedforces. After a year of rigorous flight trials in the Indian AirForce’s frontline Sukhoi-30MKI fighters, Samtel’s home-built cockpitdisplays have been certified as suitable for introduction intofrontline service.

Multi-Function Displays (MFD), as these cockpit displays are termed,are ranged in front of the Su-30MKI pilots. They get digital signalsfrom dozens of sensors on various aircraft systems and display these tothe pilot on an easy-to-read screen. A quick glance across his MFDstells the pilot how his aircraft is flying and fighting.

So far, a French company, Thales, has provided the Sukhoi-30’shigh-tech MFDs. But Samtel has aggressively targeted this market, evenchoosing to go it alone rather than work through its joint venture withThales. With Samtel’s price significantly cheaper than Thales’,Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), which builds the Sukhoi-30 at itsNashik facility, has placed orders on Samtel.

Just the start
Puneet Kaura, executive director of Samtel, anticipates MFD orders forat least Rs 250 crore. So far, HAL has placed only a modest order onSamtel but Kaura says that is normal. In a programme like the Su-30,which involves building 280 fighters over a decade, the aircraft’sinternal systems are ordered in small batches.

“The Su-30 MFDs are just the beginning,” says Kaura. “Samtel and HALhave set up a joint venture, Samtel HAL Display Systems (Samtel, 60 percent; HAL, 40 per cent), to design and build MFDs for all HAL-builtaircraft, including transport aircraft. With offsets applicable on allaircraft sales to India, Samtel will be offering them the capability toindigenously build MFDs for their aircraft.”

Samtel’s success with Su-30 MFDs seems likely to bring in another setof orders. When Samtel HAL Display Systems had offered to supplycockpit displays for the HAL-built Sitara Intermediate Jet Trainer(IJT), at a price significantly cheaper than the current foreignsuppliers, HAL had responded with Yes, if your MFDs for the Su-30MKIpass the test.

Down the line
Samtel is also eyeing a major role in developing advanced cockpitdisplays for the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA), which Indiaand Russia are building collaboratively. Cockpit systems and avionics,which can amount to 30-35 per cent of the cost of a modern fighter,fall within India’s work share in the FGFA’s Preliminary DesignContract, likely to be signed during Russian President Medvedev’s visitlater this year.

Meanwhile, Samtel has partnered the Defence research and DevelopmentOrganisation laboratory, Defence Avionics Research Establishment, andthe IAF, in developing ‘Smart MFDs’, a new generation of cockpitdisplays for the IAF’s Jaguar fighters. In these, embedded softwarecards allow the display to do its own symbology, doing away with theneed for a separate display processor. Puneet Kaura says Samtel DisplaySystems will produce a fully indigenous engineering prototype of theSmart MFD by March 2011.

Unsurprisingly, all six aerospace giants competing in the IAF’s tenderfor 126 medium multi-role fighters have signed memoranda ofunderstanding with Samtel Display Systems for manufacturing cockpitdisplays in case their fighter is selected. While these are pure ‘Buildto Print’ arrangements, aimed at meeting offset obligations, thoseforeign vendors, too, would consider designing in India and sourcingglobally from here, provided offset benefits are clea

Sukhoi Upgraded Su-33 Flight Trials Begins

Sukhoi has begun ground and flight trials of Russia’s modernised Su-33 naval fighter aircraft.

Themulti-role carrier-based fighters are being refurbished in the RussianFar Eastern city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur under a state defence order in2010, Sukhoi said.

The fourth generation warplanes withhorizontal takeoff and landing, and aerial refuelling capability, havebeen designed to defend naval ships from airborne attacks. The fightersfeature folding wings and horizontal tail for hanger storage.

TheSu-33s are armed with guided missiles such as the Kh-25MP, Kh-31 andKh-41. The fighters can be used in both night and day operations at sea.

   Sukhoibegan producing the Su-33 fighters in the 1980s. Production of thefirst two prototypes of the warplane was completed in 1986-87. Duringthe factory flight tests on Nov. 1, 1989, the first Su-33 landed on thedeck of aircraft carrier ‘Admiral Kuznetsov’.

A modernisedvariant of the original Su-27K ‘Flanker’, the Su-33 entered servicewith the Russian Navy in 1994. An air regiment comprising 24 suchfighters was formed to operate from Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier.

Sukhoi Su-27SKM Passes Flight Tests At Indonesia





All three Su-27SKMfighters delivered to Indonesia by Russia earlier this month havesuccessfully passed flight tests at an airbase in the South Sulawesiprovince, a source at the base said on Wednesday.

The planes weredelivered to Indonesia as the final part of an August 2007 $300 milliondeal for six of the Sukhoi fighters. That agreement followed on fromthe 2003 purchase by Indonesia of four fighter jets from Russia.

Indonesia's AirForce chief of staff Marshal Imam Sufaat said on Friday his countryplanned to buy six more Sukhoi fighter jets from Russia, the JakartaPost reported.
"The existing squadron of 10 Sukhois is insufficient for our vast air space," Imam told the Antara news agency.
He said the purchases had already been approved by the country's president, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

However he addedthat while the purchases would be on the Defense Ministry's long-termagenda, he was not sure when the deal would go ahead.

LONDON August 18 news: According to Russia's "ties" network on August17 reported that the Indian media recently revealed that Russia hassold India Su-30MKI multi-purpose fighter unit significantly increased1.5-fold.
India's cable news channel NewsX reports, India in 2007 to buy 40Russian Su-30MKI with only spent 1.5 billion U.S. dollars, while theRussian side of the Indian Air Force purchased 42 new this year,Su-30MKI's offer is 4.29 billion U.S. dollars. That is, in a shortperiod of three years, the unit price of Su-30MKI soared from 40million U.S. dollars to 102 million U.S. dollars.

Indian strategic analysts, the former Air Force Major General Kac notedthat the Russian side of the Su-30MKI's latest offer was "very, veryhigh", the price even faster to catch up with the latest development ofthe U.S. fifth generation fighter F-35. This should be noted that,after Lockheed Martin has been selling Indian Navy carrier-basedversion of the F-35. Does not exclude the United States in the futureto sell to the Indian Air Force F-35 possibilities.

U.S. Department of Defense had on the production model F-35 is valuedat 150 million U.S. dollars, however, with the expansion of productionscale, the price may be declining. Indian Su-30MKI Upgrade To Cost Rs 10,920-Crore


Defence Minister AK Antony mentioned India's proposed Su-30MKI upgradein Parliament today. He said, "There is proposal to upgrade the SU-30MKI aircraft of the Indian Air Force by M/s Hindustan AeronauticsLimited (HAL) with the support of the Russian Original EquipmentManufacturer. The current estimated cost is Rs 10,920 crores and theaircraft are likely to be upgraded in a phased manner from year 2012onwards.

Russia to deliver Su-30MK2 fighters to Vietnam

ZHUKOVSKY: Russia will fulfill a contract on the delivery of eight Su-30MK2 fighters to Vietnam in 2010, state arms exporter Rosoboronexport said on Wednesday.
Russia and Vietnam signed a of $500 million agreement on the sale of eight Su-30MK2 fighters in January 2009.
"The contract was signed in January, and we will fulfill it in2009-2010," Alexander Mikheyev, deputy general director ofRosoboronexport said at the MAKS-2009 air show near Moscow.
Mikheyev said Vietnam had already made several advanced paymentsunder the contract and the deliveries would be made in two batches offour aircraft each.


Su-30MK2 is an advanced two-seat version of the Su-27 Flanker multirole fighter with upgraded electronics and capability to launch anti-ship missiles.
Russia's Federal Service for Military Cooperation said in June that Vietnam had expressed interest in buying additional Su-30MK2 fighters and talks on a new contract could start in the near future.
Military aircraft continue to dominate Russia's arms exports, and are expected to total about $2.6 billion in 2009 sales.

India says satisfied with Su-30 fighter, despite crash

NEW DELHI: India is satisfied with the performance of Russian Su-30MKI fighters, despite a crash in April, and plans to double the number in service with the air force by 2015, the defense minister said on Wednesday.
The Indian Air Force originally ordered 50 SU-30MKI aircraft from Russiain 1996-98 and an additional 40 planes in 2007. Hindustani Aeronautics(HAL) was also contracted to build 140 aircraft in India between 2003and 2017 under a licensed production agreement.

"We have purchased 98 Su-30MKI combat jets since 1996. By 2015, weare planning to increase their number to 230," A. K. Antony told theupper house of the Indian parliament.
"The Indian Air Force is happy with the aircraft and we believe it is one of the best in the world," he added.
Antony said the investigation into the cause of the April 30 crash of an Indian Air Force Su-30MKI was still underway.
The plane crashed during a routine training flight near a village 170km from the town of Jaisalmer in the northeastern state of Rajasthan, killing one of its two pilots.
The incident was the first since the Su-30MKI was put into service with the Indian Air Force in 2002.
Russia sent in May a group of 20 experts to examine the wreckage of the plane and help the Indian Air Force with the investigation.
