PARIS, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Two French soldiers were killed and threeothers wounded in a military operation in Afghanistan, said FrenchPresident Nicolas Sarkozy's office on Monday, raising the country'stotal fatalities in Afghanistan to 47.
The two dead were a soldier and an officer from the 21st MarineInfantry Regiment. They were fatally wounded by gun fire during anovernight operation in Tagab, north of Kabul, while three others wereinjured at the start of the operation.
"These soldiers gave their lives in the service of France'scommitment to the peace and security of the Afghan people," Sarkozysaid in a statement.
The French president condemned "insurgents' murderous attacks" onNATO military forces in Afghanistan, stressing France would continue tobe a part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force(ISAF).
About 3,500 French troops are deployed in Afghanistan.
